SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Four players finished in double figures as No. 25 IU South Bend opened the CCAC slate in style on Tuesday night, knocking off cross-town rivals Holy Cross 79-46.
Spencer Pettit led the way for the Titans (4-1, 1-0 CCAC), finishing with a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Kenny Washington posted a career high, scoring 15 while going 7-for-9 from the floor. Micah Poole pitched in with 11 points off the bench, and Donyell Meredith tallied ten points with seven rebounds.
IU South Bend never trailed throughout the night, opening the game on an 11-4 run, with five different players scoring the first five IUSB buckets of the game. Miles Tracy stretched the lead to 18-4 with a bucket at the 14:45 mark, and the Titan advantage would grow to as much as 21 in the first half, when Pettit scored on a put-back to make it a 37-16 score with 6:35 on the clock.
Leading 49-29 at the break, the Titans continued to pull away by limiting the Saints (3-2, 0-1 CCAC) on the defensive end. The visitors would shoot 6-for-30 (20.0%) in the second half, including a 1-for-12 performance from three-point range, with the Titan defense holding the Saints to 17 points after the break.
The 33-point margin of victory goes down as the largest in the all-time series with Holy Cross, and marks the fourth straight victory for the Titans in the rivalry.
The Titans will now step outside of conference play for their next two home games, beginning with a big test on the national stage with No. 4 William Penn (Iowa) on Friday night. Tipoff from the Student Activities Center with the fourth-ranked Statesmen is set for 7:00 p.m. on November 12.
