SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In its first appearance at home since April 17, 2019, the Indiana University South Bend softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Huntington University at Potawatomi Field on Saturday, March 6. IUSB dropped game one 8-0 and saw game two slip away, 4-1. The Titans fall to 0-6 on the season.
Game One: IUSB 0, HU 8 – Hitting plagued the Titans as Huntington outhit IUSB 9-2 in game one of the double dip. Seniors
Shelby Baker and
Savanna Schmitz were the bright spot for the Titans offensively, going 2-for-3 combined for the game while Schmitz also added the only walk.
On the mound, senior
Becca Stevens went four innings, striking out three and giving up five runs. In relief, freshman
Courtney Welborn threw the final inning and allowed two hits, three runs and walked one Forester.
Huntington did most of its damage in the top of the fifth with five runs before adding one in the third and two in the second.
Game Two: IUSB 1, HU 4 – Huntington got out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the third inning, but IUSB evened the scored with its only run of the day in the bottom half of the inning.
Freshman
Emily Cave got things going with a leadoff walk.
Kaylee Darnell pushed Cave to second with a ground out to third before Cave scored off a
Kat Bessler infield single for her first RBI of the season.
Huntington broke the tie in the top of the fourth with two runs off two hits against senior
Aly Brickel who earned her first loss of the season. The right hander pitched a complete seven inning game that saw six hits, four runs, one walk and three strikeouts.
The Titans mounted threats in the sixth and seventh but were unable to score as IUSB dropped the doubleheader to close out the series.
IU South Bend remains at home next Saturday, March 13, hosting WHAC foe Aquinas for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
