Titans Fall at No. 16 Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, ILL. – The Indiana University South Bend softball team was swept in its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference twin bill Friday, April 16, at the hands of No. 16 Olivet Nazarene.  IUSB drops to 10-16 overall and 3-7 in league play.

Game One: IUSB 1, #16 ONU 9
For different Titans collected a hit at the plate as Kat Bessler, Brittany VanderBrink, Shelby Baker and Emily Anglin each went 1-for-2 in the first game. Senior Savanna Schmitz scored the run and drew the only walk.

In the circle, senior Becca Stevens threw the setback after pitching 3.0 innings that saw five runs off five hits. Senior counterpart Aly Brickel pitched the rest of the game, giving up the final four runs off seven hits.

With runners on the corners, VanderBrink struck an RBI double through the left side to bring home Schmitz to put the Titans ahead 1-0 in the top half of the first frame.

The national ranked Tigers rallied and scattered two runs of their one in the bottom half and then added to their lead with three in the bottom third, taking the 5-1 advantage.

The Titans threatened in the fourth after Baker and Anglin singled with one out. However, the threat ended with a fly out and fielder's choice. The Tigers ended the game, plating four in the fifth to seal its eighth straight victory.

Game Two: IUSB 1, #16 ONU 9
Schmitz went 2-for 3 at the plate to pace the Titan offense. Senior counterpart Haylie Williamson also notched a hit for the Crimson and Cream to go along with the lone RBI.

Freshman Macie Couch suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings. Freshman Courtney Welborn threw 1.2 innings giving up just one hit while freshman teammate Nichole VanZant allowed the final run.

The Titan offense got the game started in the third. Schmitz singled up the middle before Williamson ripped an RBI single to left as Brittney Johnstone scored after reaching with a walk.

The Tigers erupted for eight in the bottom half off six hits and two Titan errors to take control, 8-1, and eventually seal the run-rule victory in the fifth.

IUSB continues CCAC road play at Roosevelt Saturday, April 17, travelling to Chicago, Ill. for another doubleheader. The Titans wrap up its six-game road stint in Davenport, Iowa on Sunday, April 18, facing the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees for a league twin bill.
