#20 Titans upset at IU Northwest

GARY, Ind. – The shot at the buzzer was just off the mark, as No. 20 IU South Bend suffered the upset on Wednesday night, falling on the road at IU Northwest, 69-68.

Sam Snodgrass gave the Titans (23-5, 18-3 CCAC) a lead with 3:16 left to play, but two quick scores from the home team made it a 69-65 score in favor of the Redhawks (22-6, 16-5 CCAC). Donyell Meredith hit a three to bring IUSB back to within a possession, but the deep three-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim as time expired.

Sergio Diaz and Micah Poole led the way for the IUSB attack, each finishing with a team-high 14 points and Diaz collecting eight rebounds to lead the Titans. Meredith tallied 12 points on the night, along with four assists.

The Titans were in control early, going up five after Diaz's layup at the 10:36 mark of the first half made it an 18-13 game. IUSB held the lead throughout the rest of the first half, taking their biggest lead of the night on Snodgrass' bucket with 5:37 left until halftime put the Titans ahead 29-19. A pair of three-pointers from the Redhawks at the close of the half cut into the lead, and IUSB would go into the locker rooms up 33-29.

Midway through the second half, IU Northwest rallied with a 14-0 run to go up 47-40 with 13:36 left in regulation. A couple of trips to the free throw line for Kenny Washington brought the Titans back to within one, and Meredith tied the game at 50-50 with his steal and layup with 10:14 remaining.

Poole's three-pointer with 6:40 left gave IUSB a 59-55 advantage, but the Titans were unable to hold on to the lead. Seven lead changes throughout the rest of the game, but with just one field goal over the final three minutes, the Titans were unable to hold on for the win.

The Titans now return home for the regular season finale on Saturday, when they host St. Ambrose on Senior Day. Tipoff with the Bees from the Student Activities Center is set for 3:00 p.m.
