Titans split home debut with Goshen

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – IU South Bend earned their first home win of the season, as the Titans split a doubleheader with Goshen (Ind.) at Dick Pfeil Field on Wednesday, dropping game one 6-1 before earning a 7-4 victory in game two.

Freshman pitcher Abby Yarnell earned the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings of the nightcap. Yarnell surrendered four runs on eight hits while striking out two to secure her first collegiate win. At the plate, Yarnell went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to help give the Titans (7-5) a split in the doubleheader.

In the first game of the day, a five-run 3rd inning was enough for Goshen (8-4) to take the win. IU South Bend were held to just three base hits, with the team's only run coming in the bottom of the 7th on Yarnell's RBI single to right, scoring Maddy Edwards.

The Titans responded in game two, scoring runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to take an early lead. After a pair of walks, Shelby Baker hit a two-out RBI single to bring home Maddie Leisher. In the bottom of the 2nd, Savanna Schmitz recorded an RBI groundout, before Jozie Ramer hit a two-out triple to left, scoring Edwards for a 3-0 lead.

Goshen would come back with two runs in the top of the 4th on a two-run home run, but in the 5th inning the Titans would rebuild their lead on Yarnell's RBI double that scored Baker, and an RBI groundout from Emily Cave. The Maple Leafs again posted a pair of runs in the top of the 6th, but Danielle Gebhart would put the game away with a pinch-hit two-RBI single, pushing the home team's lead back to 7-4.

The Titans now prepare for a ten-game swing in Florida, beginning on Sunday, March 13. IUSB will face West Virginia Tech from the PFX Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla, with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
