WHEELING, Ill. – IU South Bend softball pulled back to .500 in conference play on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Trinity International, winning 11-6 in the opener, and taking a shortened game two, 8-0 after five innings on run rule.
Six different players drove in runs in a high-scoring first game, as the Titans (11-15, 2-2 CCAC) collected 15 base hits and drew 9 walks in the win. Olivia Zarantonello and Maddie Edwards each collected three base hits and a combined five RBI to lead the IUSB attack.
The Trojans (1-8, 0-4 CCAC) opened with a pair of runs in the 1st inning on a two-out, two-RBI double for the early lead. Following a double from Edwards in the top of the 2nd, Jozie Ramer put the Titans on the board with her sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Trinity International extended their lead with three runs on three hits in the 4th inning to go up 5-1, but a big 5th frame would put the Titans in front. The first six hitters for IUSB would reach base, on four singles, a walk, and an error, with Zarantonello's single driving in Emily Anglin to cut the deficit to 5-3. Trinity International would walk in two more runs, giving the Titans a 6-5 advantage.
IUSB would add two more runs on Zarantonello's groundout in the 6th, and on a two-out, two-RBI base hit from Edwards in the 7th.
In the second game of the day, freshman pitcher Abby Yarnell kept the Trojans' bats quiet, working around three hits without a walk and striking out five to earn the win. Three runs in the top of the 2nd, highlighted by a pair of RBI triples from Brittany VanderBrink and Cave put IUSB ahead 3-0. VanderBrink would hit another triple to start the scoring in the 5th inning, leading the Titans to five runs on five hits and an error to end the game early.
Originally scheduled to face Calumet in a doubleheader on Saturday, the Titans will now prepare to host Trinity Christian for their next matchup, on Wednesday, April 6. First pitch from Pfeil Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
