SOUTH BEND, Ind. – An eight-run outburst helped give IU South Bend a split in Saturday's doubleheader with Cardinal Stritch, as the Titans bounced back from a 6-1 loss to the Wolves in game one for a 10-2 victory in six innings in game two at Dick Pfeil Field.
Tied at 2-2 going into the 6th inning, the Titans (15-21, 6-8 CCAC) nearly doubled their hit total for the game when the offense exploded for eight runs on eight hits and a pair of errors to end the day early on run rule. In what was a pitcher's duel to that point, Cardinal Stritch (23-10, 10-8 CCAC) struck first with a run in the top of the 1st before a solo home run from Olivia Zarantonello tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 3rd.
The Titans took their first lead of the day in the top of the 5th, with singles from Maddie Leisher and Shelby Baker setting the table for Abby Yarnell's RBI base hit up the middle. The Wolves came back with the game-tying run in the top of the 6th before IUSB's rally in the bottom half of the inning ended the game. Four of the first five Titans to the plate recorded singles, while a two-RBI single from Yarnell followed by a two-RBI triple from Haley Fair put the game out of reach. Kaylee Darnell's double to left drove in Fair to secure the win.
Along with three RBI and three hits in the game, Yarnell also pitched the complete-game win, working around six hits and an earned run for her fifth win of the season. Five other Titans recorded multiple base hits, including Darnell and Brittany Johnstone, who each went 2-for-3 with a walk in the game.
In the first game of the day, Leisher and Baker each had a pair of base hits, but Leisher's 5th-inning RBI would be the only offense for the Titans. Cardinal Stritch took a lead with three runs in the top of the 3rd before adding a run in each of the next three innings to take the win.
The Titans will look to secure their CCAC Tournament hopes further on Sunday afternoon, as they head west to take on St. Ambrose in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm ET.
