Titans fall to Cornerstone in doubleheader

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (7-14, 0-0 CCAC) dropped both games of a doubleheader to Cornerstone University (6-8, 0-0 WHAC) by scores of 10-8 and 6-1. Wednesday's doubleheader is the last IU South Bend non-conference game until Saturday, April 29th, when the Titans conclude regular season play with a doubleheader against Sienna Heights University.

Game 1

The Cornerstone Golden Eagles struck first in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks in large to a three run home run by catcher Moriah Sprague. Sprague led the Golden Eagles offense going 4-4 with 3 RBI in game one. 

IU South Bend answered back with three runs of their own in the top of the third. Jozie Ramer and Maddie Leisher provided RBI singles while Hannah Albright hit a sacrifice fly to bring the Titans within one run.

One Cornerstone run in the bottom of the third found IU South Bend trailing 5-3 before a five run fifth inning put the Titans ahead 8-5.

Hannah Albright's bases loaded walk brought the Titans with one before a Kaylee Darnell sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5. 

Kaitlynne Allen broke the tie with a 2 RBI single before Jozie Ramer tripled in Allen to cap off the Titans scoring and give them an 8-5 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. 

Three Golden Eagle runs in the fifth and two in the sixth found IU South Bend on the losing side of of a 10-8 game one. 

Game 2

Cornerstone right fielder Maddy Chatman started off the scoring in game two with a solo home run in the second inning to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. 

Kaitlynne Allen's RBI groundout tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning and provided the Titans with their only run of game two. 

Cornerstone wasted no time breaking the tie with two runs in the bottom of the third to give themselves a 3-1 lead. 

Three more runs in the fifth inning left the Titans in a hole they could not climb out of, ultimately losing game two by a score of 6-1. 

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Saturday, March 25th, when they begin the conference season with a home doubleheader against the Cougars of Saint Xavier University.
