Sights Now Set on Tournament

JOLIET, Ill. --- IU South Bend saw its regular season come to a heartbreaking close Saturday afternoon, falling 68-65 in overtime at St. Francis (Ill.) at the Pat Sullivan Center.

The loss placed the Titans in fifth place in the CCAC standings, sending IU South Bend to Trinity Christian for the opening round of the conference tournament Wednesday night.

IU South Bend controlled much of the afternoon. The Titans shot 66.7 percent in the first half, built an 11-point advantage and took a 39-30 lead into the break. Kyle Olagbegi set the tone early, scoring 13 first-half points while attacking the rim and knocking down a three.

The Titans maintained a narrow edge throughout most of the second half until the 6:50 mark, when St. Francis captured its first lead of the game. From there, the teams traded blows in a wild finish that featured four lead changes and four ties over the final minutes.

Trailing 61-59 in the closing seconds, Andrew Hedgepeth delivered to keep the game alive for the Titans. With 18 seconds remaining, Hedgepeth rose and knocked down a clutch jumper to tie the game at 61-61, forcing overtime.

In the extra session, IU South Bend struck first. Collin Schmidt converted inside, and James Stevenson added a basket to give the Titans a brief 65-63 lead. But St. Francis answered with a three-pointer and a late layup to regain control.

With one final possession, the Titans worked for a clean look to tie, but the shot bounced off the rim as time expired.

Olagbegi led IU South Bend with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, but foul trouble limited him to just 18 minutes before fouling out. Hedgepeth added 17 points, while Mark White contributed six rebounds with two assists and two steals..

IU South Bend now turns its focus to the postseason, traveling to Trinity Christian on Wednesday for the opening round of the CCAC Tournament.
