Power Propels Game Two

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend hosted Olivet Nazarene in a high-scoring conference doubleheader Tuesday at Newton Park, delivering an offensive showcase highlighted by power hitting and late-inning drama. The Titans fell 8-4 in game one before erupting for a 14-11 victory in a wild four-home run nightcap.

Game Two: IU South Bend 14, Olivet Nazarene 11

The nightcap turned into an offensive explosion, with the Titans delivering one of their most powerful performances of the season.

Olivet Nazarene jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, but IU South Bend answered immediately. Reece Douglass ignited the comeback with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.

The Titans continued to rally in the second frame, taking advantage of three walks. Two hits  paired with the free bases created three scores, tying the game at five.

ONU responded with a three-spot in the third to retake the lead at 8-5 but the Titan's offense was far from being done.

The bottom of the third  began with three singles in four at bats to load the bases. Two walks and one single aided the three next three runs to knot the game once again, this time at 8-8. Douglass was up next and delivered, again. The junior showed off her power to the opposite field, launching a grand slam over the right field fence, to give the Titans the lead.

The fourth inning saw more fireworks with Freshman Peyton Norman leading off. She tacked on a solo home run, and was followed by fellow freshman Cassi Reams who also left the yard for back-to-back dingers for the Titans. Through four, the Titans led 14-8.

Despite a late push from the Tigers, IU South Bend held on for the 14-11 victory behind six innings of relief work from Jaylah Harlan, who earned the win in the circle.

Douglass delivered a career night, finishing with two home runs and seven RBIs. The junior had entered the evening with just one career homer — hit earlier this season on opening day — before doubling her total in one game. Norman went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with her second home run of the season, while Reams launched her first career long ball.

Game One: Olivet Nazarene 8, IU South Bend 4

The opener featured steady offense from both sides, but a late surge by Olivet Nazarene proved decisive.

IU South Bend struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, loading the bases with nobody out. The team went station-to-station and nabbed three runs through the first three outs.

Olivet Nazarene responded with three runs in the third to tie the contest before IU South Bend regained the lead in the bottom half on an RBI single from Cassi Reams.

With the Titans leading 4-3, Savannah Hamilton locked in the score in the circle, posting zeroes in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames.

IUSB needed just three outs to secure the win but the top of the seventh was all Tigers. The visitors tied the game with two swings and went on to score five in the inning to steal the game away, 8-4.

Chelminiak led the Titans at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Hamilton added two hits, while Reams and Harlan each drove in a run in the loss.

The Titans will be back in action on Wednesday, battling at ONU in a single game at 3:00 pm ET.
