IUSB Softball Falls on the Road at Saint Xavier

CHICAGO --- IU South Bend went toe-to-toe with Saint Xavier on Saturday in Chicago, mounting a late push in game one before falling 10-8. The nightcap proved more difficult, as the Cougars surged early and handed the Titans a 12-1 defeat.

Game One: Saint Xavier 10, IU South Bend 8

IU South Bend struck first, manufacturing a run in the opening inning when Pailei Cripe scored on a wild pitch. Saint Xavier answered quickly and gradually built a 7-2 advantage by the fifth.

But the Titans didn't fade.

In the sixth, IU South Bend put together its most complete inning of the day. Savannah Hamilton reached on an error to drive in a run. Grace Swangin drew an RBI walk. Reece Douglass followed with another run-scoring walk, and Ella Chelminiak added an RBI single to bring the Titans within one at 7-6 .

Saint Xavier responded in the bottom half with three runs to stretch the lead back to four.

Still, IU South Bend had one final push left. In the seventh, Hamilton delivered a two-run double down the right field line, cutting the deficit to 10-8 and bringing the tying run to the plate. The rally came up just short, but the pressure never relented.

Hamilton finished with three RBIs, while Douglass and Chelminiak added two and one respectively. The Titans drew eight walks and forced Saint Xavier to navigate traffic all afternoon.

Game Two: Saint Xavier 12, IU South Bend 1

Saint Xavier scored three runs in the first inning and broke the game open with a nine-run third. The Cougars capitalized on early momentum and limited the Titans' opportunities to respond.

IU South Bend managed five hits in the contest, including singles from Savannah Hamilton, Grace Swangin, Peyton Norman, Elyse Starr, and Delanie Bronner. Starr drove in the Titans' lone run in the fifth.

The Titans will look to end the series on a positive note on Sunday, hosting the Cougars at Newton Park at 1:00 pm.
