Norman Grand Slam Salvages Day

ELGIN, Ill. --- Thursday's road trip to Elgin featured two tightly contested games with pitching setting the tone in both contests against the Judson Eagles. IU South Bend fell 2-0 in the opener before rallying for a 5-2 win, thanks to Norman heroics in the seventh inning.

Jaylah Harlan and Elyse Starr each tossed complete games for the Titans in a pair of low-scoring affairs.

Game One: Judson 2, IU South Bend 0

The opener was a pitcher's duel throughout.

Harlan worked all six innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out two. She kept the Eagles off balance and limited damage despite four walks.

IU South Bend collected six hits of its own with Pailei Cripe and Peyton Norman each recording two hits. The Titans threatened multiple times, including a two-hit second inning and traffic in the seventh, but were unable to push a run across.

Judson capitalized in the third and fifth innings, plating single runs in each frame to secure the 2-0 decision.

Game Two: IU South Bend 5, Judson 2

Game two followed a similar script early before a late swing changed everything.

Starr delivered a complete-game effort in the circle, allowing just two runs — both unearned — on eight hits while striking out two. She worked around four walks and a busy base path to keep the Titans within striking distance.

Entering the sixth, the Titans trailed by one but Pailei Cripe set the team up for success. A leadoff single and steal put Cripe in scoring position, before Norman brought her home with a single.

Judson responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth, putting the pressure on the Titans going into the final frame.

Patience was key for IUSB, as three walks loaded the bases with two outs. With the game on the line, Norman looked to be the difference. On the first pitch, the freshman let loose and sent the ball over the fence for a grand slam. Her fifth home run of the season was a big one, giving IU South Bend a three-run cushion at 5-2.

Reece Douglass stepped up in the bottom of the seventh to help secure the victory. The IUSB catcher nabbed two runners trying to steal second, as the Titans picked up the win.

IU South Bend will stay on the road for its next contest, facing St. Ambrose on Friday at 5:00 pm ET.
