Game Recap: Softball |

Cripe Homers, IUSB Falls to St. Francis

SOUTH BEND --- On a chilly and windy afternoon, IU South Bend was unable to overcome St. Francis, dropping a 9-3 decision in game one before a 14-9 setback in the back half of the doubleheader. The offense did provide a few bright spots on the day, including a round-tripper by Pailei Cripe.

Game One: St. Francis 9, IU South Bend 3

St. Francis used a five-run third inning to seize control in the opener.

IU South Bend answered in the bottom half when Cripe launched a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 7-2. The Titans added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Peyton Norman.

Cripe finished with two RBIs, while Elyse Starr and Grace Swangin each recorded a hit. In the circle, Jaylah Harlan started before Starr worked the final 4.2 innings.

Game Two: St. Francis 14, IU South Bend 9

Game two featured more back-and-forth action early before one decisive inning swung the game.

The first two batters of the game for USF found success, resulting in a 2-0 lead for the visitors with just two swings of the bat.

IU South Bend responded in the bottom of the first. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases and an error aided the first run across. Next up came Peyton Norman who cleared the bases with a three-run double.

In the top of the fourth, St. Francis crawled back in front, 5-4 but once again the Titans were quick to respond. In the bottom half of the inning, the IUSB offense repeated its first inning feat - loading the bases with a single and two walks, before a base-clearing double gave them three runs.

It was Ella Chelminiak who delivered the big hit in the fourth, putting the Titans back in front, 7-5. Chelminiak ended game two with four RBI, while going 2-2 at the plate.

However, St. Francis erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning, including two home runs, to take control that would hold through the final out.

Chelminiak drove in four runs in the contest, Norman added four RBIs, and the Titans totaled eight hits and seven walks. Savannah Hamilton started in the circle, with Elyse Starr finishing the final 2.2 innings.

IU South Bend will be back in action on Friday, hitting the road to face Calumet at 1:00 pm ET.
