A Fight to the End

CROWN POINT, Ind. ---  The historic 2025-26 campaign for the IU South Bend softball team came to a close on Friday afternoon in Crown Point, Indiana. The Titans showed no quit, battling from start to finish in a 7-4 defeat against St. Francis in the CCAC Tournament.

A cold and windy day set the stage for the CCAC Tournament Semifinals between No. 2 Seed St. Francis and No. 6 Seed IU South Bend. The final score told only part of the story, as the Titans showed resilience throughout, refusing to fold after an early setback and fighting until the final out.

Game Recap: IU South Bend 4, St. Francis 7

After a quiet first, St. Francis broke through with a five-run second inning to seize early control.

IUSB answered immediately in the bottom half of the inning, as Ella Chelminiak ripped a double down the left field line to drive in Grace Swangin and cut into the deficit. Elyse Starr followed with an RBI single to bring the Titans within 5-2.

The early response set the tone — the Titans were not going quietly.

IU South Bend threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs. A flyout ended the rally without a run crossing.

In the fifth, the Titans once again filled the bases, this time with no one out. A pair of popouts and a strikeout kept the runners in place, as the threatening chance was thwarted again.

Down 7-2 entering the seventh, IU South Bend made one last run.

Savannah Hamilton, who finished the day with three hits, sparked the rally with a single. Reece Douglass walked and Jade Baker added her own single to jam the bases, once again.

Freshman Peyton Norman delivered, lining a single to left to score a run and cut the deficit to 7-3.

Moments later, with the tying run inching closer, a sharply hit ball turned into a double play, flipping the inning's momentum.

Still, the Titans weren't done.

Chelminiak singled to bring home another run, pulling IU South Bend within 7-4 and bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs but a final strikeout ended it.

The Titans tallied 10 hits in the loss. Hamilton led the way with three. Norman, one of two freshmen making big impacts, added two hits, an RBI, and a double. Chelminiak delivered two hits, including a double and two RBIs.

Starr tossed key innings in relief for the Titans, going four innings and a third while allowing eight hits but giving up just one run.

IU South Bend put together an incredible finish to the season, advancing the furthest into the conference tournament in program history. The Titans graduate two seniors, Jade Baker and Grace Swangin following the conclusion of the season.
