Martin's Breakaway Lifts IU South Bend

NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- The first victory of the 2026 season came on Thursday night, as IU South Bend defeated local foe, Saint Mary's College. A first-half goal from Emma Martin and a strong defensive effort aided the 1-0 road win over the Belles.

The Titans improved to 1-2 on the season and secured their first shutout of 2026, while goalkeeper Mikayla Saunders earned the first collegiate clean sheet of her career. Saint Mary's finished with 10 shots, but the IU South Bend defense prevented the Belles from putting a single attempt on goal.

IU South Bend nearly opened the scoring midway through the first half. Genevieve Smith fired an attempt off the crossbar in the 21st minute before sending another chance just high less than a minute later.

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute. Olivia Enyeart played a well-placed ball forward to Martin, who got behind the Saint Mary's back line and found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Martin calmly won the matchup, beating the keeper to her left and tucking the ball inside the left post to give IU South Bend a 1-0 advantage.

Saint Mary's threatened late in the opening half, striking the woodwork three times over a two-minute stretch, but the Titans escaped each opportunity and carried their one-goal advantage into halftime.

IU South Bend continued creating opportunities after the break. Martin attempted to double the lead in the 56th minute when her attempt found the right post, while Katie Coleman added another shot later in the half.

From there, the Titan defense protected the advantage. Saint Mary's generated four shots in the second half, but none reached Saunders, as IU South Bend's back line consistently disrupted the Belles before they could test the goalkeeper.

The freshman Martin secured her first collegiate goal on Thursday.

Saunders, Enyeart and Mia Hoffman-Buczek each went the full 90 minutes for IU South Bend as the Titans finished off their first win and first clean sheet of the new campaign.

IU South Bend will be back in action on Sunday at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis for a 1:00 pm match.
