Coach Phelps graduated from Portage Central High School in 2013. Phelps was a walk-on for baseball at Kalamazoo Valley Community College for two years where he held over .400 career batting average. After KVCC, he transferred to IUSB where he finished his last two years of eligibility. Post college, Coach Phelps played a year of independent baseball for the Old Orchard Beach Surge in the Empire League, where he doubled as a reliever and an infielder and was named an All Star reliever.
Kevin Phelps graduated from IUSB in 2017 and took a head coaching job at Comstock High School in Comstock, Mich for the 2019 campaign.. As a head coach for the Colts, Phelps boasted an impressive 20-7 record until returning to KVCC as the hitting coach for the 2020 season. KVCC's offense was off to one of its best starts in program history before it was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
