Women's Hoops Stunned by Trojans in Final Seconds at Home

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 20 Indiana University South Bend women's basketball team was stunned in a late game heroic from Trinity International during Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's contest Saturday, Feb. 1, inside the Student Activities Center. The loss gave the Titans its fourth straight, dropping to 19-5 overall and 11-5 in league play.

Trinity International evened the score at 69 apiece with 1:54 remaining in the fourth before taking the lead just 30 seconds after on a layup. Freshman Katie Gard responded with just under one minute left, converting a layup as the score read 71-71.

Junior Courtney Haynes drew a charge in the lane to give the Titans the ball back with just 20 seconds in the contest before a steal and an acrobatic layup by TIU's guard, Kassandra Ybarra, with five seconds gave the Trojans the 74-71 victory after a made free throw to seal the upset.

The Titans began the game on fire, surging out to a 16-3 advantage but in the fourth quarter, the Trojans began to cut the deficit. Ybarra nailed a three-pointer in the final seconds of the third, pulling TIU within eight heading into the fourth. ?

Five different Titans scored in double figures with freshman Maddie Gard leading all IUSB players with 12 points. Maddie Gard missed just one field goal on the afternoon, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor. Sister Katie Gard added 10 points to go along with a team-high six assists.

As a team, Trinity International held a 52.9 to 47.7 edge in field goal percentage. The Trojans knocked down 8-of-15 attempts from behind the arc compared to IUSB who converted just 4-of-14 from three. The Titans held the 33-24 rebound advantage while outscoring the Trojan bench, 27-18.

IU South Bend hits the road for two contests in four days, beginning at St. Ambrose on Monday, Feb. 3 before making the trip over to Chicago, Ill. to face Roosevelt University on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
