Fourth Quarter Surge Boosts IUSB Past Roosevelt

CHICAGO, Ill. - A 20-point fourth quarter was enough to lift Indiana University South Bend women's basketball to a 76-65 victory at Roosevelt University in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening, Feb. 5. The Titans trailed the Lakers 38-28 at the half but outscored them by 37 in the second half to come out with their second consecutive win.

With the win, IU South Bend improved its record to 21-5 overall and 13-5 during league play while Roosevelt dipped to 7-18 overall and 6-11 against CCAC opponents.

A Taylor Wesley layup with 19 second remaining in the third stanza evened the score at 56 all, erasing the 10-point lead after halftime. The game would go back-and-forth through out the next four minutes of play in the final quarter until a pair of free-throws from junior Courtney Haynes sparked the Titan offense.

IU South Bend held the Lakers to just five points in the final 5:55 minutes of play while as a team the Titans added 14 to seal the road win on Wednesday night.

Freshman Maddie Gard turned in a career-high 26 points off 9-of-18 shooting to go along with a career-high 10 rebounds, nothing her first career double-double as a Titan. Senior guard Kyleigh Kubik aided in the scoring with 15 points while senior counterpart Taylor Wesley added 12 points off the bench.

For the game, IUSB went 25-for-63 from the floor (39.7 percent) and 8-of-20 from distance (40 percent). Indiana University South Bend was strong at the free throw line, converting 18-of-25 freebies for a 72 percent clip. On the flip side, the Titan defense held the Lakers to 24-of-59 from the floor and 7-of-22 from beyond the three-point line.

IUSB held the big 53-24 advantage on the glass while winning the bench points, 22-8. The Titans as a team dished out 19 total assists while also grabbing eight total steals on the night.

The Titans return home Saturday, Feb. 8 to host Judson University for another CCAC matchup. The game is slated for 1 p.m. inside the Student Activities Center with the IUSB men's basketball team to follow.
