Volleyball takes sweep over Governors State

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – IU South Bend got back to its winning ways on Tuesday night, with a straight-set sweep over Governors State at the Student Activities Center.

After celebrating her 1,000th career kill recorded in the last home match, Hannah Marchand led the attack for the Titans (18-5, 14-1 CCAC), scoring a game-high 17 kills in the win. McKenzie Powell tallied 36 assists and 14 digs for her 14th double-double of the year, and just her seventh in a three-set match.

The visiting Jaguars (4-14, 3-11 CCAC) took a brief lead in the opening set with three straight points to claim a 4-3 advantage. With three aces from Amber Jacobs and four Marchand kills, the Titans reeled off 10 of the next 11 points for a 13-5 lead. Another nine-point run put the first set out of reach, with IU South Bend taking the opener 25-11.

Tied 5-5 in game two, a trio of kills from Marchand, Powell, and Felisha Campanello started a 6-1 run for the Titans, giving the home side an 11-6 lead. IUSB again put the set away down the stretch, taking a four-point lead at 16-12 and going on an 8-2 run with a pair of kills from Abby Seeger. Leading 24-15, Jacobs gave the Titans their second game of the night with a kill at 25-16.

The Titans jumped out to an early lead in the third set, going up 8-2 with the third kill from Jacobs in the early portion of the game. Governors State used a four-point run to close the gap to 12-10, but kills from Jacobs and Julie Brown helped IUSB rebuild a six-point advantage, 16-10. With a 22-18 lead, Campanello and Marchand scored back-to-back kills, setting up match point, with the senior ending the night two plays later.

IU South Bend now prepares for their final road trip of the regular season, when they face Olivet Nazarene on Thursday, October 28. First serve from Bourbonnais, Ill. is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
