RICHMOND, Ind. – A balanced attack saw seven players finish in double figures on Wednesday night, as No. 25 IU South Bend opened the 2021-22 campaign with a strong road win at IU East, 91-64.
IU South Bend jumped out to an 8-3 lead behind six quick points from Sergio Diaz by the 17:41 mark. The Red Wolves (0-1) bounced back with a pair of threes to even the score at 12-12 just four minutes later, and briefly moved in front with eight unanswered points in a 1:02 stretch. The Titans (1-0) reclaimed the lead on Donyell Meredith's layup midway through the first half as part of an 11-1 run, and would remain in front the rest of the way.
A run of 11 straight points, capped by Sam Snodgrass' three-pointer at the 6:15 mark gave the Titans a double-digit advantage, and the visitors would go into the locker room leading 42-26.
In the second half the Red Wolves would briefly cut the lead to 11 after three quick three-pointers, 57-46 with 13:06 to play, but that would be as close as they would get. IU South Bend out-scored their opponents 34-18 the rest of the way to secure the win.
The Titans continue their three-game season-opening road swing on Saturday, when they take on Lawrence Tech (Mich.). Tipoff from Southfield is set for 4:00 p.m.
