HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Behind 17 points apiece from Sara Doi and Katie Gard, IU South Bend picked up their sixth win of the early season, 68-58 over the Huntington Foresters.
Doi tallied her 17 points thanks to five three-pointers in the win, while Gard was 6-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Rachel Robards collected 15 points with six rebounds, and Courtney Haynes pitched in with nine points and nine boards.
The Titans (6-2) got out to an early 9-2 lead in the opening minutes behind a three from Doi and back-to-back scores from Gard by the 6:54 mark of the first quarter. Huntington would even the score at 11-11 later in the period, but a pair of free throws from Gard gave IUSB the edge by the end of the first.
Six straight to open the second quarter put the Titans up by eight, but again the home team responded, scoring an 11-0 run to take the lead, 22-19 with 5:38 left in the half. Three-pointers from Haynes and Robard, along with three free throws by Robard fueled an 11-point swing in the other direction, and the Titans would take a 33-25 lead into the half.
Back-to-back threes from Maddy Schumacher and Robards pushed the IUSB lead to 16 points midway through the third quarter, as the Titans managed a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Another three from Doi in the fourth quarter gave IU South Bend their largest lead of the night, 61-39 with 9:34 left to play. Huntington would close the game on an 11-2 run, but ran out of time before getting back into the game.
Gard was named to the Huntington Classic all-tournament team after the win, averaging 14.5 points over both games this weekend.
The Titans will now step back into conference play next week, beginning with a visit to Saint Xavier on Wednesday night. Tipoff with the Cougars on November 17 is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
