SOUTH BEND, Ind. – It took all five sets, but IU South Bend closed out the regular season while celebrating the team's senior class in a victory over the Judson Eagles on Thursday night.
The win marks the 11th straight victory at home, matching the program's all-time record set back in 2019. Before the match, seniors Hannah Marchand and Julie Brown were recognized as part of the Senior Night festivities.
Both seniors had strong performances, leading the Titans (20-6, 16-2 CCAC) with 15 kills apiece in the win. McKenzie Powell registered 42 assists with 13 digs, while Amber Jacobs also picked up a double-double, with 10 kills and 14 digs.
The visitors took the opening set, jumping out to a 7-2 lead to start the night. The Titans were unable to pull even throughout the game, pulling to within two at 12-10 on a kill from Brown, as the Eagles (22-10, 11-7 CCAC) out-scored IUSB 13-4 after that point.
A hard-fought second set saw nine ties and four lead changes, with a block and a kill from Powell giving the Titans a narrow three-point lead at 9-6. Judson responded with five of the next six points to reclaim the lead, 11-10. Kills from Jacobs and Brown put IUSB back on top for good at 13-12, as part of a 5-1 run, and Brown would later close out the set with back-to-back kills for a 25-20 win.
Judson rallied back again in game three, taking an 8-3 lead to start the set. A late rally that included two straight kills from Jacobs closed the gap to 17-14, but the Eagles put the set way with five of the next six points to go up 22-15 on their way to a 25-19 win.
Looking to force game five, the Titans scored five straight as part of a 11-6 advantage early in game four. Another three-point run with kills from Powell and Marchand stretched the lead to 17-9. Following two kills from Jacobs at 20-11, the Eagles responded with a 6-1 run, closing the gap to 21-17. Two Marchand kills and a pair of Eagle errors would shut down the comeback attempt, giving the Titans a 25-18 win.
Abby Seeger's two kills and an ace from Powell gave IU South Bend a 4-1 lead to start the decisive set, and the lead grew to 7-2 following kills from Suriya Van der Oord and Felisha Campanello. Judson scored the next three to close the gap, but the Titans finished the night on an 8-1 run to secure the win.
With the victory, the Titans formally secure the No. 2 seed in next week's CCAC Tournament, and will host No. 7 Cardinal Stritch on November 9. First serve from the Student Activities Center is set for 8:00 p.m.
