MIDWAY, Ky. – IU South Bend benefited from a hot hand beyond the arc, as the Titans picked up a road win on Saturday afternoon by defeating Midway (Ky.), 80-71.
As a team the Titans (4-1) nearly shot fifty percent from three-point range, going 13-for-28 (46.4%) on the day. Rachael Robards led IUSB with 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including a 7-for-11 performance from long-range. Sara Doi scored 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers, while Katie Gard came close to a triple-double with 11 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds.
The Eagles (1-1) held a four-point advantage midway through the first quarter, after back-to-back threes made it a 13-9 score for the home team at the 5:06 mark. The Titans responded with 14 unanswered points, including 11 straight points from Robards, and would lead 23-18 by the end of the first quarter.
The run continued, as IU South Bend scored 13 straight to open the second quarter, leading 36-18 on Katie Gard's layup at the 4:45 mark. The basket would mark the Titans' largest lead of the first half.
The Titans would control the game, maintaining a double-digit lead until the closing minutes of the game, when Midway would go on an 11-3 run and close the gap to 73-67 with 2:25 to play. A pair of free throws would make it a five-point game, but buckets on the last three possessions by Emma Fisher and Courtney Haynes, along with two key stops on the defensive end, secured the victory for IUSB.
IU South Bend will now prepare to step back into conference play next week, when they host cross-town rivals Holy Cross on Wednesday night. Tipoff against the Saints from the Student Activities Center is set for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10.
