Titans defeat Lincoln in final home game of 2021

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Katie Gard led IU South Bend with a career-high 24 points on Thursday night, as the Titans picked up their CCAC-leading 11th overall victory of the season, 85-76 over Lincoln.

Gard helped the Titans (11-4, 4-3 CCAC) to a big early lead, scoring 18 points in the first half, as IUSB took a 15-point advantage by the end of the first quarter, their largest of the night. Four other players finished in double figures, including Maddie Gard with 17 points, Rachel Robards with 15, and Sara Doi with 10.

The Titans opened the game with seven straight points, and had a 19-8 lead with three minutes left in the opening period, following a three-pointer, steal, and fast-break layup by Katie Gard. Two quick scores from Amaya Rufus to close the quarter capped a 13-2 run for the Titans, giving the home team a 25-10 lead.

Lincoln (1-10, 1-8 CCAC) battled back in the second quarter, scoring 12 of the first 14 points of the period and cutting the lead to 27-22 at the 7:12 mark. A three from the Lynx later in the quarter made it a two-point game, 31-29, but a three-pointer in response by Katie Gard turned the momentum just before the end of the first half. The Titans would go into the break with a 40-34 halftime lead.

After going 1-for-9 from three-point range in the second quarter, the Titans started to heat up after halftime, shooting 8-for-14 (57.1%) from beyond the arc in the second half. Robards hit a pair of threes early in the third quarter to keep IUSB in front, 46-38, and a three from Maddy Schumacher pushed the advantage to double digits, 58-47 with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

The Lynx would push the margin down to four points in the fourth quarter, but a pair of threes by Robards fueled a 10-2 run that helped the Titans hold on down the stretch. Doi's three-pointer with 1:39 remaining secured the win, as the IUSB defense held Lincoln to just one field goal over the final three minutes of play.

The Titans will have the weekend off before heading across town on Tuesday, December 21 to take on Holy Cross. Tipoff with the Saints is set for 5:30 p.m.
