SOUTH BEND, Ind. – In a fast-paced, high-scoring matchup, IU South Bend secured their third straight victory and their seventh straight at home with a 104-81 win over cross-town rivals Bethel (Ind.) on Wednesday night.
Sara Doi led all scorers with 24 points in the win, knocking down a career-best six three-pointers on the night to go with five assists. Five players finished in double figures for the Titans (9-3), as Maddie Gard scored 15, and Maddy Schumacher came off the bench to score 14. Katie Gard pitched in with 13, and Emma Fisher recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
As a team, the Titans hit 15 three-pointers, the most in a single game since 2018. The team got out to an early 7-0 lead after Katie Gard's three at the 8:50 mark of the first quarter, and led the rest of the way. Bethel (6-7) cut the lead to one later in the period, but a three-pointer from Schumacher followed by a steal and fast-break layup by Fisher pushed the gap back to 26-17 with 2:43 left in the first.
The Titans grew their lead to double digits late in the first half, with threes from Maddie Gard and Doi in the closing seconds. IUSB went into the break leading 51-38, behind a team-high ten points from Katie Gard.
Opening the second half with seven straight, IUSB made it a 20-point game on a layup from Fisher at the 8:05 mark. Bethel made their biggest run of the game later in the third, going on a 10-2 run that cut the lead down to 69-62 with 56 seconds left in the third period. The Titans bounced back, scoring seven in a row highlighted by two buckets from Taitlyn Trenshaw in the final 30 seconds to put IUSB back up 76-62. IU South Bend put the game away in the fourth quarter, behind nine more points from Doi at the Pilots were unable to make another comeback.
The Titans are back in action on Thursday night, when they host Oakland City (Ind.). The non-conference matchup at the Student Activities Center is set for 5:00 p.m. on December 9.
