SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend softball team split a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference twin bill with Calumet College of St. Joseph Tuesday, April 13. After taking the first game 4-0, the Crimson Wave broke through senior pitcher
Aly Brickel during the seventh frame of the nightcap to seal a 2-1 victory.
The Titans move to 10-13 overall and 3-4 during CCAC play this season.
Game One: IUSB 4, CCSJ 0
Senior
Becca Stevens pitched the complete came, yielding just five hits and striking out four Crimson Wave batters to earn her fourth win of the season.
Offensively four different Titans tallied a hit in game one, including a two-run dinger to right field from MacKenzie Myars in the bottom of the sixth to help seal the win. Seniors
Savanna Schmitz and
Kat Bessler along with junior
Brittney Johnstone knocked in the other hits for the Titans.
Schmitz lead the game off with a double down the left field line and eventually was brought home off the CCSJ catcher's wild throw. Meanwhile
Emily Anglin collected an RBI with a ground out to second, driving in Bessler to make the score 2-0.
Both teams went scoreless through the next four complete innings until Myars added the two insurance runs as Schmitz came in off the junior's seventh bomb of the season.
Game Two: CCSJ 2, IUSB 1
Indiana University South Bend couldn't get the bats going in the second game for starting pitcher
Aly Brickel as the Titans collected just three hits.
Haylie Williamson led the offense going 1-for-3 with a run scored while
Brittany VanderBrink and
Nicole Grazioli added the other hits.
Once again, IUSB got things started with a run in the bottom of the first frame. VanderBrink ripped a two-out triple to right center as Williamson scored, giving the Titans the 1-0 advantage.
Brickel gave up her first hit of the game in the third with a single through the right side but ended the threat by retiring the next three CCSJ batters.
After six innings of play, Calumet College of St. Joseph collected just two hits off Brickel before adding three hits in the seventh that lead to two runs and the victory. The Crimson Wave pitcher wasted no time in the bottom half, retiring the IUSB side.
The Titans remain in league play this weekend but begin their six-game road trip with Olivet Nazarene on Friday, April 16 for a doubleheader clash with the Tigers beginning at 4 p.m. in Bourbonnais. IUSB then faces Roosevelt in Chicago, Ill. on Saturday, April 17 before ending the weekend at St. Ambrose on Sunday, April 18.
