UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. - McKenzie Powell became just the fifth player in IU South Bend Volleyball history to reach an important milestone, as the senior recorded her 1,000th dig in the Titans' straight-set win at Governors State on Thursday night.
The Rolling Prairie, Ind. native entered her senior season with 959 career digs, and reached four figures with the last of her ten-dig performance against the Jaguars. In addition, the setter collected 42 assists, a career high and just one shy of the IUSB program record for assists in a three-set match.
The Titans (3-1, 1-0 CCAC) jumped out early on the hosts, taking the opening set by a 25-13 margin. IUSB posted a .467 attack percentage in the first set, scoring 15 kills with just one error. Governors State (1-4, 0-1 CCAC) would respond in game two, leading late, 18-15, but a kill from
Abby Seeger would start a 6-2 rally to put the Titans back in front, 23-20. A kill followed up by a service ace from
Hannah Marchand closed out the game and gave IU South Bend a 2-0 lead in the match.
Early in game three, the Titans would run off four straight kills - two from Marchand and two more from
Amber Jacobs - to take a 6-3 lead. Another 3-0 rally stretched the lead to 15-9, but Governors State clawed back, scoring five straight to even the score at 18-18. Kills from
Julie Brown and Felicia Campanello down the stretch allowed IUSB to score four of the next five points, and the visitors closed out the match with the final three points, securing the win on
Whitney Gessinger's ace on match point.
Marchand paced the offense with 20 kills in the win, posting a .357 attack percentage. Freshman libero
Suriya Van der Oord led the Titan defense with 11 digs.
The Titans return to the
Student Activities Center next week, when they host Olivet Nazarene on Tuesday, September 7. First serve with the Tigers is set for 7:00 p.m.
