Titans knock off Trolls in straight sets

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Led by Julie Brown's 13 kills, IU South Bend picked up their fourth straight win on Tuesday night, sweeping Trinity Christian in three sets 25-19, 25-23, 25-17.

The team leader in attack percentage had another strong night at the net, collecting 13 kills on 25 attempts, with just four errors in the win. Senior hitter Hannah Marchand tallied 10 kills as well, while Amber Jacobs finished with nine.

The Titans (11-3, 7-0 CCAC) jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, as a pair of kills from Jacobs and two Whitney Gessinger aces put the visitors in front 6-2. The Trolls (4-10, 2-7 CCAC) closed the gap to 12-10 before another IUSB rally stretched the lead again, as two kills from Brown put the Titans ahead 16-10. Trinity would respond again, using a 7-2 run to earn a chance to tie the set, but South Bend closed the game by scoring the final five points, with back-to-back blocks from Felisha Campanello earning the set.

The Trolls came out strong in game two, taking an 8-3 lead and staying in front until late in the set. Trailing 19-17, IU South Bend scored five of the next six points – including three kills from Jacobs – to move in front 22-20. Marchand then scored back-to-back kills to take the set after Trinity pulled even at 23-23, giving the Titans a 2-0 lead in the match.

IU South Bend would lead the third set wire-to-wire, although the Trolls kept things close until three straight kills from Brown started an 8-1 rally that put the Titans ahead for good, 23-15.

McKenzie Powell scored 36 assists over three sets to fuel the IUSB attack, while Gessinger served up a season-high three aces on the night. Defensively, Gessinger also led the team with 12 digs, while libero Suriya Van der Oord registered ten digs on the back line.

The win keeps IU South Bend in a tie atop the CCAC standings, with a trip to St. Francis up next on the slate. First serve with the Saints from Joliet, Ill. is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 2.
