HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Starting pitcher Robbie Berger put up five shutout innings, as IU South Bend secured a split in Saturday's doubleheader, defeating Rio Grande (Ohio) 8-4 in game one before falling in the nightcap, 10-1.
Berger struck out ten hitters over five innings of work, scattering four hits in the win, earning K's for the first eight outs to start the game. Four players finished with multiple base hits in the first game, led by Owen Benson's 3-for-4 performance at the plate, with two RBIs. Tony Reyes, Brenden Bell, and Ethan Allen all had a pair of base hits in the win.
The Titans (1-2) took a first-inning lead when Benson's bases-loaded single scored Reyes for the 1-0 advantage. In the top of the 5th, a one-out double from Reyes set up Allen for a RBI single, and later a sacrifice fly from Hunter Bedell. Allen also scored on an error in the inning, as the Titans scored three runs on four hits during the inning.
The Red Storm (5-6) rallied back in the bottom of the 7th, scoring four runs on two hits and four walks to tie the game. With bases loaded and one out, Rio Grande would line into a double play, ending the threat and sending the game to extra innings.
IUSB responded right away, as Coby Campbell's RBI double put the Titans back on top in the top of the 8th. Nolan Unger and Reyes both followed up with RBIs, and Owen drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Titans four runs in the frame. Riley Getman finished out the win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 8th in relief.
In the second game of the day, IUSB posted a run in the top of the first after drawing three walks and Reyes capitalizing by scoring on a wild pitch. Rio Grande would even the score in the bottom half of the inning, then add on five more runs in the 4th to take a 6-1 lead.
The Titan offense would go quiet in game two, with just three hits as Rio Grande held IUSB off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Zack Dobos pitched three innings for IUSB, with three hits allowed an an unearned run. Ian Glogovsky had one and a third innings of relief, striking out four.
The Titans are back in action next week, when they travel to Laurnburg, N.C. for a four-game series with St. Andrews (N.C.). The matchup gets underway with a doubleheader on Friday, February 18 at 12:00 p.m.
