#20 Titans secure NAIA berth with win at Governors State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – A balanced offensive attack that saw seven players finish in double figures helped lead No. 20 IU South Bend to their fifth straight win on Monday night, as the Titans knocked off Governors State 100-78.

The victory also secures the Titans (23-4, 18-2 CCAC) no worse than the no. 2 seed in next week's CCAC Tournament, and an automatic bid into the 2022 NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship next month. The team will make its third trip to the national tournament in program history, all coming in the past three seasons.

Dylan Allen and Sergio Diaz led the way for IUSB on Monday night, each finishing with 16 points in the win. Donyell Meredith tallied 15 points, while Micah Poole came off the bench for 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Spencer Pettit and Kenny Washington each scored ten points on the night.

After the Jaguars (10-17, 7-13 CCAC) scored the game's opening bucket to kick things off, IU South Bend responded with 14 straight points and held Governors State without a field goal until the 14:15 mark of the first half.

IUSB would lead the rest of the night, leading by as much as 17 after Allen's steal and fast-break layup at the 11:05 mark made it an 28-11 score. The Jaguars bounced back, hitting a pair of threes in the closing minutes before halftime and closing the gap to 45-39 at the break.

The Titans rallied back out of the gate in the second half, behind a three from Miles Tracy and a bucket from Pettit, reclaiming a double-digit lead at 52-39 with 18:25 left to play. Governors State would connect on another pair of three pointers to cut the lead to seven, but the Titans would hold off the comeback and put the game away with a 10-0 run with three minutes left in regulation.

Monday's victory also secures program records for the most conference wins in a season (18), and most regular-season victories in a single season (23).

The Titans will now prepare for their final road trip of the regular season, when they travel to IU Northwest on Wednesday, February 16. Tipoff with the Redhawks is set for 8:30 pm ET.
