GARY, Ind. – Despite a tough shooting night, IU South Bend held on down the stretch to take a road win over IU Northwest, 59-54 on Wednesday night.
The Titans (22-6, 15-5 CCAC) went 4-for-29 from three-point range in the win, and shot just 29.3% overall (17-58) but held their opponents to under 33% shooting themselves, while forcing 18 turnovers throughout the night. IUSB took advantage, outscoring the Redhawks (19-8, 14-6 CCAC) in points off turnovers by a 19-7 margin.
Sara Doi finished with a team-high 15 points for the Titans, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Maddie Gard collected 13 points with three assists and four steals, while Katie Gard pitched in with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Titans would lead by as much as eight points in the first quarter, after Doi completed a three-point play at the 14-6 mark to make it a 14-6 score. Two field goals in the final minute of the period for the home team would close the gap, and the Titans would take a 19-15 lead into the first intermission.
Katie Gard would give the Titans their biggest lead of the night early in the second quarter, when her layup made it 24-15 and gave IUSB a nine-point advantage. The Redhawks would respond, going on a 12-3 run and scoring the last eight points of the half to tie the game, 29-29 at the break.
The lead would change hands six times throughout the third quarter, as neither side led by more than four points throughout the period. A three-pointer from Rachael Robards reclaimed the lead for IUSB at the 2:34 mark, and Doi's steal leading to another score from Robards closed the quarter with a 39-35 advantage for the Titans.
IU South Bend would lead the rest of the night, but twice in the fourth quarter the Redhawks would make it a one-point game. A three-point play from Katie Gard pushed the lead back to 48-44 near the five-minute mark. After the Redhawks closed to within a point again with 3:42 left to play, the Titan defense held them to just one field goal the rest of the way, converting their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The Titans now turn their attention to Saturday's regular-season finale, when they host St. Ambrose at the Student Activities Center. A win on Saturday would clinch home-court advantage for the Titans in the first round of the CCAC Tournament next week. Tipoff with the Bees is set for 1:00 p.m.
