Titans split with Foresters in weekend doubleheader

KOKOMO, Ind. – IU South Bend split a doubleheader over the weekend, winning their third straight with a 10-7 victory over Huntington (Ind.), before falling in the second game of the day 17-5 in six innings to the Foresters on Saturday afternoon.

The Titans (6-4) scored ten runs on just nine hits during game one, taking advantage of three Huntington errors in the win. Maddy Edwards led the way both at the plate and in the circle, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs while picking up the win in relief.

IUSB took an early lead in the 2nd inning, when Edwards' two-RBI single scored Olivia Zarantonello and Shelby Baker. A pair of errors allowed two more runs to score, giving the Titans a 4-0 advantage. Huntington (1-4) rallied back with five runs in the top of the 4th, but Edwards would score the game-tying run after her double, scoring on a ground out to make it a 5-5 game.

Maddie Leisher gave the Titans the lead in the 5th inning with an RBI triple, scoring Brittany VanderBrink. Two more runners would come home, each on wild pitches in the inning, and IUSB would lead the rest of the way.

In the second game of the day the Titans would take an early lead when two runs scored on an error in the 2nd inning, but would be unable to generate any more offense for the next three frames, while the Foresters would score 17 runs over the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings to take the win.

Savanna Schmitz drove in three RBI in the game, reaching base twice and going 1-for-3 at the plate. Courtney Welborn finished 2-for-3 with a double for the team's only extra-base hit.

The Titans are back in action on Wednesday, March 9, when they host Goshen (Ind.) at Dick Pfeil Field. First pitch for IUSB's home opener is set for 4:00 p.m.
