BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Maddie Leisher led IU South Bend with three hits on Tuesday afternoon, but the Titans were unable to keep pace with Olivet Nazarene, suffering a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Tigers, 7-3 and 9-2.
The freshman catcher went 1-for-3 in the first game, then 2-for-4 in game two. Brittany Johnstone led the way in the first game, with a pair of base hits and an RBI. Both teams were held to just base hit apiece until the bottom of the 4th, when the Tigers (18-7, 8-1 CCAC) collected four runs on five hits to take the first lead of the day.
The Titans (14-20, 5-7 CCAC) responded in the top of the 5th, after Shelby Baker's leadoff double led to an RBI single from Johnstone. That would be all the rally would produce, and Olivet Nazarene tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 5-1.
After two more for the Tigers in the 6th, IU South Bend posted a pair of runs in the top of the 7th after a one-out double from Johnstone set up Jozie Ramer's RBI double. After a wild pitch and an ONU throwing error, Ramer would come home to make it a 7-3 score before the Tigers closed out the game.
IU South Bend struck first in game two, as three singles in the top of the 3rd included an RBI bunt single from Savanna Schmitz that drove in Abby Yarnell. The Tigers would respond with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd and three more in the 4th to claim a 6-1 advantage.
Olivia Zarantonello's RBI double in the top of the 5th scored Schmitz, who singled with two outs to start the rally, but the Titans wouldn't be able to continue the run, and the Tigers secured the win with another three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Schmitz finished 2-for-3 in game two, including a walk, run, and RBI.
The Titans return home next week, when they host Calumet in a makeup doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday, April 19. First pitch from Pfeil Field is set for 4:00 p.m.
