JOLIET, Ill. – In a postseason opener that stretched into the early hours of Saturday morning, IU South Bend fell in their first round matchup at the CCAC Tournament, 5-4 to top-seeded Olivet Nazarene.
The Titans (15-31-1) struck first in the top of the 2nd, when Jake Vanderwoude led off by reaching base on a hit by pitch. The senior then advanced to third on a passed ball and ground out, then scored on the second passed ball of the inning.
Starting pitcher Robbie Berger allowed just two hits over the first four innings, but Olivet Nazarene (35-15) broke through in the bottom of the 5th, using a pair of singles and a sac fly to post two runs and take a 2-1 lead. IU South Bend responded in the 7th, hitting three straight one-out singles to load the bases. Brett Sikorski tied the game with a sac fly, scoring Jake Dykstra to tie the score. Vanderwoude's two-out single scored Tony Reyes for the go-ahead run, with Brenden Bell adding to the lead when coming home on an ONU fielding error.
The Tigers pulled even again in the bottom of the 8th, scoring two runs on two hits, then pushed another run across in the bottom of the 9th for the walk-off win.
Nolan Unger, along with Bell and Vanderwoude all finished with two hits in the game, while Sikorski reached base three times by going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, and RBI and a triple.
Berger pitched 7.1 innings, striking out five while allowing three earned runs on the night.
The Titans a quick turnaround, as the team now faces Roosevelt in their first lower-bracket matchup. After a final pitch that game in after 2:00 a.m. ET, todays first pitch from Duly Field in Joliet is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
