CHICAGO, Ill.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (12-5, 9-2 CCAC) defeated the Saint Xavier University Cougars (14-5, 8-3 CCAC) by a score of 81-63. Wednesday's win moves IU South Bend into second place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, trailing the Roosevelt Lakers by half a game.
Looking to avenge their lopsided loss to Saint Xavier in their first meeting, the Titans came out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Tied at 4-4 less than two minutes into the game, a three point field goal from
Micah Poole gave the Titans the lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
With under three minutes remaining in the first half of play, back to back layups by
Dejon Barney for four of his 20 points in the contest sparked a 10-1 run for IU South Bend that sent them into halftime with an 11 point lead. It took Barney less than one half of action to record his third double-double of the season, with 12 points and 11 rebounds in under 20 minutes of play.
Senior forward
Miles Tracy also shined in the first half, scoring 10 of his 12 points in the first 15 minutes of playing time. Tracy finished just two rebounds shy of double-double status with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Saint Xavier began the second half on a 7-2 scoring run that ultimately came to a holt thanks to back to back baskets from senior guard
Donyell Meredith II. Held scoreless in the first half, Meredith II found his stride in the second half by scoring 13 points on 6-8 shooting from the field.
Outscoring the Cougars by seven points in the second half, IU South Bend cruised to an 81-63 victory, avenging one of their two conference losses.
With 21 rebounds in Wednesday's contest,
Dejon Barney broke the Indiana University South Bend record for rebounds in a single game. Barney now holds the record for points scored in a game with 38 and rebounds in a game with 21.
The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Saturday, January 14th, as they look to sweep the season series over the Jaguars of Governors State University. Tip off is at 3:00 PM in the Students Activities Center.
