Titans sweep season series over Saint Xavier, move into first place in conference

CHICAGO, Ill.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (16-1, 10-1 CCAC) defeated the Saint Xavier University Cougars (13-5, 9-2 CCAC) by a score of 73-65. Wednesday's victory gives the Titans a season sweep of Saint Xavier, IU South Bend defeated the Cougars in their first meeting 78-66 on November 16th, in the Student Activities Center. 

With a 10-1 conference record, IU South Bend breaks a tie with Saint Xavier and moves themselves into sole possession of first place in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. 

Down by six after the first quarter of play, IU South Bend scored the first eight points of the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead. Senior guard Emma Fisher led the charge to begin the second quarter, scoring four of her season high 14 points in the 8-0 Titans run. After trading baskets throughout the second quarter, IU South Bend went into halftime with a 36-31 lead.

A resilient Saint Xavier fought back to take a 44-43 lead with under three minutes to play in the third quarter. Back to back layups by Katie Gard helped her reach a game high in scoring with 19 points and give the Titans a two point lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

Fouled on the first shot attempt of the fourth quarter, Maddie Gard went to the free throw line and knocked down all three attempts to begin her eight point fourth quarter and give the Titans a five point lead. Down by one with under five minutes to play, IU South Bend closed out the game on a 16-5 run that ultimately found them victorious by a score of 73-65.

Four Titans reached double figures in Wednesday's contest, led by Katie Gard who finished with 19 points on 7-11 shooting from the field and seven rebounds to help secure an IU South Bend victory. Maddie Gard was next in line, scoring 18 points while knocking down all eight attempts from the free throw line. Her 18 points gives her six games this season in which she has scored 15 or more. 

Normally a facilitator, Emma Fisher played more of a scoring role in the win over Saint Xavier, scoring a season high 14 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Tia Chambers was the last Titans to reach double figures, falling one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. 

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Wednesday, January 18th, looking to avenge their only loss of the season as they travel to Joliet, Ill., to take on the Saints of Saint Francis University at 6:00 PM ET.
