SOUTH BEND, Ind.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (6-14, 2-1 CCAC) defeated the Saint Xavier University Cougars (9-15, 1-2 CCAC) by a score of 5-1. Sunday's win moves the Titans into a three-way tie for 2nd place three games into the conference season,Â
The IU South Bend pitching staff allowed just one earned run through nine innings of work, striking out five while walking only one hitter.Â
Matt Lood started for the Titans and pitched two innings of shutout baseball, surrendering just one hit and striking out one.Â
Senior right handed pitcher
Riley Getman relieved Lood in the third inning, surrendering two hits, striking out one and picking off one in his inning of work.Â
Robbie Berger earned the win in Sunday's nine inning contest, pitching six innings while allowing one run on six hits and three strikeouts. With his win on Sunday, Berger breaks a six-way tie and moves himself into sole possession of second place all time for the most wins in IUSB history.Â
Gabe Cortez got the offense started in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field to break the tie and give the Titans a one run lead. Cortez's solo shot was his third of the year, moving him into a tie for the team lead in home runs with three.Â
The Titans tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by right fielder
Kole Miller and RBI singles from
Brett Sikorski and
Gabe Cortez, giving them both multi-hit afternoons in Sunday's victory.Â
Outfielder
Jake Dykstra provided the Titans with an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a pinch hit RBI double that scored
Brett Sikorski and capped off the IU South Bend scoring.Â
Indiana University South Bend returns to action on the road tomorrow, Monday, March 20th, looking for a season sweep of Saint Xavier at 1:00 PM.Â
