Titans split doubleheader with Saint Ambrose, await Monday's rubber match

SOUTH BEND, Ind.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (11-17, 7-4 CCAC) split a doubleheader against Saint Ambrose University (10-19, 5-4 CCAC) by scores of 12-3 and 1-0. Sunday's split keeps IU South Bend in a tie with Olivet Nazarene University for 2nd place in the CCAC, trailing Trinity Christian by one and a half games.

Game 1

Senior left handed pitcher Taylor Clifton started on the mound for the Titans in game one, pitching two innings while allowing one run on two hits and striking out one to pick us his second win of the year.

Bryson Taylor and Jake McKendry combined to throw one and two thirds innings of relief before Jaidyn Morris earned the save by pitching three and one thirds innings of hitless play.

Offensively, shortstop Brett Sikorski got IU South Bend on the board with a two run homerun to give the Titans a 2-1 lead in the second. Sikorski's second inning homerun was his fourth of the 2023 season, the most by any Titan.

IU South Bend plated three more runs in the third inning with an RBI double by designated hitter Kaleb Farnham and RBI singles by Anthony Pohl and Brett Sikorski, giving the Titans a 5-1 lead through three innings.

Two Saint Ambrose runs in the fourth inning brought the Fighting Bees within two runs before the Titans answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

RBI doubles by Kole Miller and Kaleb Farnham, an RBI single by Anthony Pohl, and a Saint Ambrose error helped IU South Bend take a seven run lead into the fifth inning.

A Kaleb Farnham RBI hit by pitch and an Anthony Pohl RBI fielder's choice plated two more runs in the fifth, giving the Titans a 12-3 that they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.

Kaleb Farnham's three RBI game one gives him the team lead with 26, moving him into fifth place in the CCAC.

Game 2

Junior Matt Lood started on the mound for the Titans in game two, pitching two innings without allowing an earned run while striking out two.

Saint Ambrose right fielder Adrian Zietara scored the lone run of Sunday's game two, crossing the plate on a two out IU South Bend error to give the Fighting Bees a 1-0 lead.

Senior right handed pitcher Riley Getman relieved Lood and pitched a scoreless third inning, his fifth consecutive scoreless appearance.

Robbie Berger relived Getman, pitching six innings of shutout baseball allowing just four hits while striking out three.

Berger now has back to back appearances of at least six innings pitched without allowing an earned run. His 1.98 ERA is good for the second lowest earned run average in the CCAC.

Offensively, IU South Bend was shutout in game two with three scattered hits coming from Kole Miller, Kaleb Farnham, and Drew Barber in the 1-0 loss.

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Monday, April 3rd, with a 12:00 contest against Saint Ambrose for the series win.
