Titans fall in four sets to #16 Bethel

MISHAWAKA, Ind.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (1-5, 1-0 CCAC) fell in four sets to the Bethel University Pilots (9-0) by scores of 8-25, 17-25, 25-21, 13-25.

Set 1

IU South Bend fell behind in set one 5-0 before a Bethel attack error and a kill by senior Alexis Joyner got the Titans on the board. The Pilots then picked up where left off, leading by as much as 21-4 before kills by Ryleigh Grott and back to back kills by Macy Sherman gave the Titans some momentum. Bethel won three of the next four points to win set one 25-8. 

Set 2

Both teams traded points in set two with the game tied 5-5 early. The Pilots then caught fire, winning ten of the next twelve points to jump out to a 15-7 lead. Kills by Macy Sherman and Taylor Hostetler as well as a block by Abigail Seeger and Macy Sherman won IU South Bend the next three points, moving them closer to striking distance at 15-10. The Pilots took 10 of the next 17 points to win set two by a score of 25-17. 

Set 3

Set three saw the Titans and Pilots each go an early run, trading points to come to a 13-13 tie before IUSB rattled off four straight points thanks to Bethel errors and a kill by Macy Sherman to take a 17-13 lead. IU South Bend went on to win eight of the next 16 points, capped off by an Abigail Seeger kill to take set three over Bethel 25-21. 

Set 4

IU South Bend gained an early lead over the Pilots in set four thanks to three kills by Taylor Hostetler to help give the Titans a 6-2 advantage. Bethel rallied with four consecutive points to tie the game at 6-6. Both teams continued to trade points, with set four being tied as late as 10-10 before Bethel scored seven points in a row to take a 17-10 lead. IUSB scored just three more times in set four, falling to Bethel 25-13. 

Offensively, Abigail Seeger led the team with nine kills, Taylor Hostetler finished with eight, and Macy Sherman ended Friday's contest with seven kills while setter Emma Knowlton led the passing game with 36 assists. Defensively, both Sydney Hanna and Macy Sherman tallied double digit digs while Abigail Seeger finished with a team high five blocks. 

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Saturday, September 2nd, in a doubleheader hosted by Bethel University. At 11:00 AM, IU South Bend squares off with the Phoenix of Cumberland University. Shortly after that, the Titans conclude the Liz Hossler Labor Day Classic with a 1:00 game against Grace College.
