IUSB Drops Road Battle at Taylor Despite Strong Start

UPLAND, Ind. --- After opening the season with a win earlier this week, the IU South Bend women's basketball team couldn't hold off a second-half surge from Taylor University on Saturday night, falling 80-72 inside Odle Arena.

The Titans (1-1) led by as many as 12 in the second quarter and carried a 41-37 advantage into halftime, but the Trojans (2-0) rallied to eliminate the IUSB lead in the second half.

IU South Bend had four players in double figures, led by Bradie Chambers' 21 points on an efficient 8-for-12 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line. Tenleigh Phelps posted her second straight double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Aubrie Booker added 14 points, including three triples. Sydney Jerrells came off the bench to score seven points and grab five rebounds.

The Titans came out firing, shooting 50 percent in the opening period to take a 19-11 lead, then stretched it to double digits midway through the second quarter. Phelps and Booker combined for 15 points in the frame, giving IUSB a 41-37 edge at the break.

Taylor found its rhythm in the second half, outscoring the Titans 43-31 over the final 20 minutes. Warfel and Madi Allen combined for 21 fourth-quarter points as the Trojans shot 60 percent from the field to close out the win.

Despite the loss, IU South Bend held its own statistically, finishing with a 41.3 percent shooting mark and a perfect 16-for-16 at the free throw line. The Titans also dominated the glass 38-30 and scored 17 second-chance points, but 21 turnovers proved costly as Taylor capitalized for 23 points off IUSB miscues.

IU South Bend returns home next week to face Spring Arbor at the Student Activities Center on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
