GRANGER, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend Baseball Team (9-15, 5-5 CCAC) swept the midweek conference doubleheader over Calumet College of St. Joseph (4-9, 1-3 CCAC) in their home opener by scores of 7-4 and 4-2.
Game 1 (W 7-4)
The Titans got out to an early lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to some CCSJ errors and sacrifice flies from
Kaleb Farnham and
Josiah Nelson. The Crimson Wave responed with a run in the top of the second inning to bring the game within one. IUSB had a big fourth inning, scoring four runs to take a 6-1 lead thanks to a
Nick Turner RBI walk, an
Evan Fortson RBI sacrifice fly, and RBI singles from
Lucas Brown and
Braedon Leathed. CCSJ tried to claw their way back into the game scoring three unearned runs in the fifth inning to bring the score to 6-4 heading into the last two innings of game one.
Josiah Nelson added an insurance run for the Titans in the bottom of the sixth inning with solo home run to center field.
Andrew Parker got the start on the mound for the Titans going 4.2 innings giving up 4 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hits and 4 strikeouts and picking up the win.
Jack Kienzle picked up the saving throwing 2.0 innings, giving up 0 runs on 0 hits and striking out 3.
Game 2 (W 4-2)
Similar to game one the Titans got out to an early lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a
Kaleb Farnham RBI double and a
Gabe Cortez RBI single. CCSJ tied the game up in the third inning scoring two runs on a pair of RBI doubles. After a scoreless fourth inning the Titans took the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring two runs on a
Joe Jefferson RBI sacrifice fly and a
Kaleb Farnham RBI single. The bats for both teams went quiet for the rest of the game as sun set on Rex Weade Stadium.
Gabe Cortez got the start on the mound going 2.0 innings giving up 0 runs on 1 hit and 2 strikeouts.
Riley Thomas went the rest of the way on the mound throwing 7.0 innings giving up 2 runs, 2 earned, on 8 hits and 6 strikeouts while picking up his third win of the season.Â
The Titan Baseball team is now 5-5 in CCAC play, good for a tie of fifth place in the standings. The Titans return to action with another home series as they play host to Saint Xavier University (9-13, 2-4 CCAC) on Friday and Saturday March 21st and 22nd.
