WESTFIELD, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend Softball Team (2-8, 0-0 CCAC) fell to Taylor University (9-1, 0-0 Conf.) in both games of the doubleheader by scores of 9-7 and 8-4.
Game 1 (L 9-7)
The Titans looked to get back on track in their first game action in a week when they traveled to Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. to face the Trojans of Taylor University. However, the Trojans came out the gate swinging putting up four runs in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. The Titans stayed scoreless through their first three times at the plate, while Taylor's offense kept chugging along adding one more run in the third inning to bring the score to 5-0. IUSBÂ pushed a run across in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a
Maddie Leisher RBI triple. Taylor responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning scoring two more runs to make it 7-1. In the fifth inning the Titan offense came to life scoring six runs to tie the game at 7-7 with just two and a half innings left to play. The six run inning was highlighted by RBI singles from
Reece Douglass and
Abigail Yarnell, as well as a 2 RBI double from
Maddie Leisher. With the game tied in the bottom of the sixth inning the Trojans manufactured two runs after a leadoff double to take the lead 9-7 heading into the last inning of the game. The Titans went three up three down in the top of the seventh, securing a victory for Taylor in game one of the doubleheader.
Maddie Leisher led the way offensively going 2-4 with a triple, a double, and 3 RBI's.
Savannah Hamilton took the loss in the circle during her 2.0 innings of relief late in the game allowing 2 runs on 2 hits.
Game 2 (L 8-4)
Despite six errors from the Titan defense there was still some fight late in the game, but the seventh inning rally came up short in the game two 8-4 loss. Taylor's offense jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning, and one run in the third inning to give them a 5-0 lead through the first three innings. After a scoreless fourth inning the Titans got on the board with three runs in the fifth inning led by a 2 RBI double from
Summer Johnson and an RBI single
Aubrey Gearhart to bring the score to 5-3. Taylor responded immediately with two runs of their own in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth to extend their lead to 8-3. Down to their final three outs the Titans got some runners on and pushed a run across on an RBI single from
Aubrey Gearhart, but the Trojans stranded a runner in scoring position to end the Titan threat and taking game two of the doubleheader 8-4.

Elyse Starr got the loss throwing 5.0 innings giving up 7 runs, 6 earned, on 10 hits and striking out one.
Softball is back on the road Sunday March 9th when they travel to Lima, Ohio to face University of Northwestern Ohio for another non-conference doublheader.
