GRANGER, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend (22-28, 17-15 CCAC) split their weekend four-game series with Judson University (27-22, 19-13 CCAC) losing both games on day one 14-7 and 21-3. The Titans turn it around in day two on Senior Day winning both games 9-3 and 16-6, securing a spot in the CCAC Baseball Tournament.
Game 1 (L 14-7)
The Titans traveled to Elgin, Ill. to face the Eagles of Judson University for their final CCAC four-game series of the season just two wins away from securing a spot in the postseason. IUSB got out to an early lead scoring a run in the top of the second inning when
Gabe Cortez hit a double and
Josiah Nelson drove him in with an RBI triple. Judson responded immediately in the bottom of the second hitting back to back home runs to start the inning and take the lead, the Eagles would go on to score five runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Judson would continue their hitting ways scoring six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 11-1 lead. Adding two more runs in the fourth inning and one run in the sixth inning Judson had ran away with the game leading 14-1 going into the seventh inning. The Titans would rally in the top of the seventh inning scoring six runs on a
Lucas Brown three RBI home run, a
Kaleb Farnham RBI sacrifice fly, and a
Gabe Cortez two RBI double, but Judson would end the Titan threat there taking game 14-7.
Gabe Cortez and
Josiah Nelson were each two-for-three at the plate while
Lucas Brown led the team with three RBI.
Adam Amodei picked up the loss on the mound for the Titans throwing 1.2 innings giving up five runs on five hits and no strikeouts.
Game 2 (L 21-3)
Judson continued swinging some hot bats in game two totaling 21 runs fueled by a six run fifth inning and a 13 run sixth inning. The Titans got out to an early lead once again scoring a single run in the top of the second inning on a
Kaleb Farnham solo shot to right center field. Judson would take the lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly and an error from IUSB. The Titans would regain the lead 3-2 in the fourth inning when
Evan Fortson scored on a passed ball and
Clint Goodman scored on a Judson error. In the fifth inning Judson had two outs and nobody on but after a walk and a hit by pitch the Eagles rattled off four straight hits including a three run home run to score six runs in the inning and take a 8-3 lead. The sixth inning wasn't pretty for Titan pitching staff as they sent four different pitchers to the mound while the Eagles scored thirteen runs on 10 hits including four home runs and two doubles. The big inning put the Titans away, leading to a seven inning mercy of 21-3.
Joe Jefferson was the only Titan with a multi hit game having two of IUSB's four hits while adding a double.
Andrew Parker picked up the loss throwing five innings giving up 10 runs, nine earned, on eight hits and one strikeout.
Game 3 (W 9-3)
Day two the Titans hosted Judson at Rex Weade Stadium for Senior Day still needing two wins to secure a postseason spot. The Titans scored four runs in the second inning on a
Gabe Cortez two RBI home run to left field, a
Braedon Leathed RBI walk, and a
Jack Ryan RBI fielders choice. The Titans extended their lead to 7-0 with three more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from
Clint Goodman,
Lucas Brown, and
Braedon Leathed. Judson would score a single run in the fourth inning and the fifth inning to make it a 7-2 game, but the Titans would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a
Evan Fortson two RBI home run to left field. Judson etched another single run in the sixth inning, but that's all they could muster for the rest of the game giving the Titans a 9-3 win.
Gabe Cortez got it done on both sides of the ball going three-for-four at the plate with two RBI while also throwing a complete game on the mound throwing seven innings giving up three runs on seven hits and one strikeout.
Clint Goodman was also three-for-four at the plate with a RBI.
Game 4 (W 16-6)
In the final game of the four-game series the Titan offense would score in each of the seven innings of the ball game highlighted by a seven run third inning. The Titans got on the board first scoring a run in the first inning on a Judson wild pitch that allowed
Braedon Leathed to score. IUSB would add another run in the second inning on a
Jack Ryan RBI sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead. IUSB would score seven runs in the third inning on a
Nick Turner RBI single, a
Lucas Brown two RBI single, a wild pitch from Judson, a
Gabe Cortez RBI fielders choice, a double steal that brought home
Braedon Leathed, and a wild pitch that scored
Gabe Cortez. IUSB would extend their lead to 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a
Jack Ryan RBI triple. Judson got two runs back in the top of the fifth inning, but IUSB responded with a run of their own a Judson error to make it a 11-2 game. Judson continued to knock at the door scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but once again the Titans responded this time with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a
Gabe Cortez RBI double and a
Quinn Meier two RBI single to put the Titans ahead 14-4. With Judson being three outs away from being mercied by the Titans, they managed to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning to make a 14-6 game. The Titans responded with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on a
Jack Ryan RBI single and a
Gabe Cortez RBI single that ended the game with the Titans beating Judson 16-6 in seven innings.
Jack Ryan and
Gabe Cortez each had two hits and three RBI for the Titans,
Braedon Leathed was a quiet one-for-one at the plate with five walks and four runs scored.
Riley Thomas picked up the win on the mound throwing 5.1 innings giving up four runs on six hits and four strikeouts.
With the two wins this weekend the Titans have secured a spot in the CCAC Baseball Tournament that begins Wednesday April 30th at Duly Health and Care Field in Joliet, Ill. Where the team stands in terms of seeding is yet to be determined, but the Titans finish the regular season with a 22-28 record and 17-15 in CCAC play, a four win improvement from last season and a seven win improvement in conference play.
