Game Recap: Baseball |

Titans Struggle to Finish Against St. Ambrose

GRANGER, Ind. - The Indiana University South Bend Baseball Team (11-23, 7-11 CCAC) lost all four games of a weekend CCAC series against St. Ambrose University (18-15, 15-7 CCAC). The Titans lost three of the four games in the sixth inning or later, losing game one 5-2, game two 4-1, game three 8-4, and game four 9-7.

Game 1 (L 5-2)
Both teams of game one got off to a slow start offensively trading no runs in the first two innings. St. Ambrose got on the board first with a single run in the top of the third inning, but IUSB responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a Jack Ryan RBI double that tied the game at 1-1. The Titans took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single run, heading into the final three frames of game one. In the sixth inning St. Ambrose scored four runs on just one hit, as the IUSB bullpen struggled to find the strike zone taking the lead 5-2. The Titan offense was unable to get anything going in their last two at bats dropping game one of the series. Despite a solid start Riley Thomas, who had to be pulled from the game unintentionally, suffered the loss. Thomas threw 5.2 innings giving up three runs, three earned, on just two hits and four strikeouts.

Game 2 (L 4-1)
The Titans and the Bees were stuck in a pitchers duel through the first five innings with both teams being held scoreless. Once again in the sixth inning, St. Ambrose had a big inning scoring three runs, this time in part to some Titan errors. The Titans responded with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run from Braedon Leathed to keep the game within reach at 3-1 in favor of St. Ambrose. Both teams were unable to score until St. Ambrose scored a single run in the top of the ninth inning, again fueled by a Titan defensive miscue. The Titans were set down in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to lose game two 4-1. Andrew Parker gave a quality start on the mound for the Titans throwing six innings giving up three runs, one earned, on three hits and two strikeouts. Lucky Teerman threw two scoreless innings of relief to keep the game within reach only allowing one hit and striking out none. Josh Vis threw the ninth giving up one unearned run on two hits and three strikeouts.

Game 3 (L 8-4)
The Titans looked to turn the tide in day two getting out to an early 2-0 lead on a Jack Ryan two-run home run in the first inning. Offense was few and far between until the fifth inning when St. Ambrose scored a single run to make it a 2-1 ballgame. The Titans responded two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a Braedon Leathed RBI sacrifice fly and a Jack Ryan RBI single, giving the Titans a 4-1 lead heading into the final two innings of the game. Almost like clockwork St. Ambrose had a big inning the top of the sixth inning scoring five runs, three of which were unearned because of the Titan defense giving St. Ambrose a 6-4 lead. The Bees tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away with the game 8-4, leaving the Titans one more game to salvage the series. Jack Ryan led the offense going two-for-four with three RBI's and a home run. Gabe Cortez picked up the loss on the mound throwing 5.2 innings giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits and five strikeouts.

Game 4 (L 9-7)
After some great pitching from both teams in the first three games of the series, it seemed it was time for both offenses to turn it on. St. Ambrose scored one run in each of the first five innings, while the Titan offense scored two runs in the first inning, two runs in the third inning, and three runs in the fifth inning, giving the titans a 7-5 lead after five innings of play. The bullpen wavered once again for the Titans giving up three more runs in the seventh inning and one run in the eighth inning giving the Bees a 9-7 lead heading into the last inning of play. The Titans couldn't much going and St. Ambrose completed the sweep with a 9-7 late inning win in game four. Kaleb Farnham led offense going three-for-four with four RBI's and a home run. Gabe Cortez had a good game at the plate going two-for-four with a double and two RBI's. Adam Amodei opened the game on the mound throwing two innings giving up two runs on four hits and one strikeout. Josh McCormick picked up the loss in relief throwing four innings allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits and three strikeouts. Alex Marshall threw one inning of relief giving up one run on two hits and no strikeouts, while Aaron Boyer threw the final two innings giving up no runs on no hits and one strikeout.

The Baseball team returns to action Tuesday April 8th when they travel to Calumet College of St. Joseph (6-17, 3-11 CCAC) for the conclusion of their CCAC series with a midweek doubleheader. The Titans took the first two games of the series back on March 18th beating the Crimson Wave 7-4 and 4-2. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm ET at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind.
