Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Titans Honor Professor Hopkins During Cancer Awareness Game

SOUTH BEND --- The Indiana University South Bend women's soccer team put together a strong opening stretch Saturday afternoon but could not turn its early pressure into goals, falling 4-0 to Saint Xavier University at Newton Park.

The match served as IU South Bend's Cancer Awareness Game, with the Titans recognizing and honoring Professor Dawn Hopkins as part of the day's festivities.

IU South Bend came out on the attack and created several opportunities over the opening 15 minutes. Olivia Enyeart forced a save in the fourth minute before Sophie Aguilera and Genevieve Smith followed with shots on goal. Enyeart tested Saint Xavier goalkeeper Natalie Dybas again in the 10th minute, and Smith put another attempt on frame in the 14th as the Titans kept pressure on the Cougars early.

The match remained scoreless deep into the first half before Saint Xavier broke through in the 38th minute and added another less than three minutes later to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

IU South Bend continued to create chances after the break. Erica Thackery produced back-to-back shots on goal in the opening minute of the second half, while Smith also tested the goalkeeper shortly afterward. Saint Xavier, however, added goals in the 51st and 64th minutes to extend the margin.

The Titans had an opportunity to get on the board in the 68th minute when Fatima Cervantes stepped to the penalty spot, but Dybas made the save to preserve the shutout.

IU South Bend finished with 15 shots and put 11 on goal. Enyeart led the Titans with five attempts, while Smith recorded four and Thackery added three. Mikayla Saunders played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves.

The result moves IU South Bend to 4-6-1 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The IUSB squad will be back at home on Tuesday, hosting Judson at 3:00 pm.
