Ranked Road Test Goes to Viterbo

LA CROSSE, Wis. --- IU South Bend's three-match winning streak met a difficult roadblock Saturday afternoon against No. 18 Viterbo.

The nationally ranked V-Hawks remained unbeaten in conference play with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-11 victory over the Titans. IU South Bend moved to 10-14 overall and 6-4 in conference play, while Viterbo improved to 20-5 and 9-0.

After a tough opening frame, IUSB put together its best stretch in the second set. The Titans scored the first two points behind an Alyssa Carson kill and Kadence Brumitt ace and stayed within striking distance through much of the frame. Viterbo eventually created separation, but IU South Bend made one final push from a 23-16 deficit, scoring four straight behind consecutive Emalee Maesch kills and a block from Maesch and Kate Dole before the V-Hawks closed out the set, 25-20.

Viterbo's efficiency ultimately made the afternoon difficult to turn around. The V-Hawks hit .364 as a team and better than .320 in all three sets, including .435 in the finale. IU South Bend was held to 23 kills and a -.011 percentage against one of the CCAC's top teams.

Maesch supplied the strongest offensive showing for IUSB, finishing with a team-high nine kills while adding an ace and two block assists. Dole made the most of her opportunities with two kills on seven swings without an error for a .286 hitting percentage, while Kendall Gerdes added three kills and two block assists.

The Titans also continued to find production from the service line. Brumitt recorded four aces, accounting for two-thirds of IUSB's six on the afternoon, while Maesch and Mallorie Elliott each added one. Elliott also saw action in the third set and contributed two assists and two digs.

Mia Norris and Brynn Lake combined for 17 assists, with Norris handing out 10 and Lake adding seven. Brumitt led the back row with six digs, while Lake and Norris each collected five.

The Titans will return home for their Dig Pink Night on Tuesday, hosting Saint Xavier at 7:00 pm.
