Carson Shines as IUSB Battles ONU on the Road

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. --- IU South Bend landed the first punch Saturday afternoon, but Olivet Nazarene found its response over the final three sets.

The Titans opened their road matchup with a 25-23 victory before the Tigers rallied to take the next three, handing IUSB a 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 19-25 defeat inside McHie Arena. IU South Bend moved to 11-15 overall and 7-5 in conference play, while ONU improved to 19-7 and 11-1 in the CCAC.

IU South Bend looked sharp from the opening serve. Alyssa Carson delivered three kills within the Titans' first five points, while an Emily Adams ace and Carson solo block helped IUSB quickly build an 8-3 advantage. The lead eventually grew to 19-11 as the Titans kept ONU from finding much rhythm.

The Tigers made the finish much more interesting, trimming the eight-point deficit all the way to one at 24-23. Carson made sure the comeback stopped there. The sophomore hammered her eighth kill of the opening set on the next rally, sealing the 25-23 victory. IUSB finished the frame with 14 kills and hit .250.

The Titans carried that momentum well into the second.

A Carson kill evened the frame at 10 before IUSB put together its best run of the set. Behind the serve of Brynn Lake, the Titans scored seven consecutive points and built an 18-11 advantage. ONU, however, steadily chipped away before its offense caught fire late and swung the set in its favor, 25-21, to even the match.

The third remained up for grabs through the midway point. IUSB led early and was still even with the Tigers at 14-14 before ONU put together the separation it needed for a 25-19 finish.

IU South Bend continued to battle in the fourth, turning an early deficit into an 11-9 lead behind a Kadence Brumitt ace and consecutive blocks from Kate Dole and Carson. The Tigers answered again, using a mid-set run to take control before closing the match with another 25-19 win.

Carson was the standout for the Titans, finishing with 16 kills on 30 attacks and just five errors for a .367 hitting percentage. She also continued her recent impact at the net with three solo blocks, finishing with a match-high 19 points.

Emalee Maesch followed with seven kills, while Dole quietly put together another efficient performance in the middle. Dole finished with five kills without an attacking error on 11 swings, good for a .455 hitting percentage, and added two solo blocks.

The setting duties were again shared between Mallorie Elliott and Brynn Lake. Elliott handed out a team-high 17 assists with five digs and two aces, while Lake contributed 11 assists, eight digs, two kills and an ace.

Defensively, IUSB recorded seven solo blocks and two block assists, with Carson and Dole accounting for five of those solo stuffs. Ari Short, Brumitt and Lake each finished with eight digs, while Adams added seven digs and two service aces.

The Titans will have another challenge on Wednesday, hosting Viterbo at 6:00 pm.
