IUSB Finds Its Groove in Sweep of IU Northwest

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend came ready to swing Tuesday night.

The Titans delivered against a fellow Indiana University regional campus, combining an efficient attack with steady control from start to finish in a 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 sweep of IU Northwest inside the Student Activities Center. The win moved IUSB to 9-13 overall and 5-3 in CCAC play.

The final margins did not fully capture how consistently IU South Bend controlled the match. The Titans trailed briefly during the opening stages of all three sets, but once IUSB reached 12 points in a set, it never fell behind again the rest of that frame.

That control was powered by an offense that finished with 51 kills on .303 hitting, while IU Northwest totaled 34 kills at a .219 clip. IUSB hit at least .250 in every frame and came out firing with 19 kills and a .400 attack percentage in the opening set.

The first set provided an early glimpse of what was coming. IU Northwest opened with a 6-3 advantage, but the Titans slowly erased it before taking their first lead at 9-8. Later, with IUSB ahead 16-12, Emalee Maesch, Kadence Brumitt and Brynn Lake helped fuel a five-point run that stretched the margin to 21-12. IU Northwest made a late push, but Alyssa Carson finished the frame with a kill for the 25-22 win.

The Titans showed the same composure in the second. After falling behind 12-10, IUSB responded and soon turned a 13-13 tie into a 17-13 advantage. Brumitt added an ace during another surge that pushed the lead to 19-14, and the Titans remained comfortably in front from there for a 25-20 victory.

By the third, IU South Bend was playing from in front almost immediately. The Titans broke a 3-3 tie and never trailed again, building an advantage as large as six before keeping IU Northwest at arm's length down the stretch. Carson delivered the final kill once again to put an exclamation point on the sweep.

Mia Norris and Brynn Lake kept the offense moving all evening, combining for 45 assists. Norris led the way with 24 assists and eight digs, while Lake handed out 21 assists and was involved in two blocks. Together, they helped four Titan attackers finish with at least 10 kills or hit better than .300.

Brumitt turned in a monster three-set performance, pounding a match-high 17 kills on .316 hitting while adding four service aces and nine digs. She finished with 21.5 points to lead the team.
Carson was even more efficient. The sophomore put away 13 kills on just 22 swings, committing only three errors to hit .455. Kate Dole was better yet from the middle, finishing with six kills and no errors on 11 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage, while also contributing four block assists.

Maesch gave IUSB a fourth player in double figures with 10 kills and completed a double-double with a team-high 11 digs. Bree Lake added four kills, while Emily Adams and Olivia Ringer helped steady the back row with six and seven digs, respectively.

The Titans also created problems from the service line, finishing with eight aces compared with three for IU Northwest. Brumitt accounted for four of them, with Adams, Maesch, Norris and Renee Shrewsbury each adding one.

IU South Bend will be back in action on Thursday, battling St. Francis on the road at 7:00 pm CT.
