Chambers Nabs Double-Double in Heartbreaker at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. --- IU South Bend put together a gritty defensive performance and positioned itself for a statement road victory Wednesday night, but a last-second three-pointer spoiled the Titans' efforts in a heartbreaking 60-59 loss to Huntington University. In a matchup between two programs receiving votes in the preseason NAIA Top 25 poll, IUSB battled through a tightly contested game in which neither team led by more than six points.

The Titans (2-1) showed determination throughout the night, overcoming offensive struggles with tenacious defense that kept Huntington (3-0) off balance. After trailing by four at halftime, IU South Bend turned the tide in the second half, limiting the Foresters to just 26 points over the final 20 minutes and building a lead that held until the closing seconds.

IU South Bend came out aggressive, with Aubrie Booker and Bradie Chambers combining for 11 early points to help the Titans jump ahead 13-7 midway through the first quarter. Huntington answered with an efficient offensive stretch, connecting on 66.7 percent of its first-quarter attempts, including three triples, to take a 21-17 advantage after 10 minutes.

The second quarter turned into a defensive battle as both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm. IUSB shot just 22.2 percent from the field in the period, but its defensive pressure prevented the Foresters from creating significant separation. Booker connected on a three-pointer late in the half to bring the Titans within two before Huntington carried a narrow 34-30 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of halftime, the Titans flipped the momentum with an inspired defensive effort. Chambers knocked down a pair of early jumpers, while Kenzie Fulks and Keylee Hudson helped erase the deficit. Fulks then took control, scoring on back-to-back possessions to give IUSB a 42-38 advantage with 4:37 remaining in the third.

IU South Bend's defense continued to frustrate the Huntington attack, holding the hosts to just 28.6 percent shooting in the quarter while forcing five turnovers. Andrea Benefield provided a valuable spark off the bench, contributing four points during the period, while Lindsay Arcella connected on a late jumper to send the Titans into the fourth with a 48-46 lead.

The Titans carried that energy into the final stanza, with Fulks and Chambers continuing to lead the charge. Chambers scored six of IUSB's first seven points in the quarter, including two free throws that pushed the advantage to 54-50. A Hudson free throw later extended the lead to five with just over six minutes remaining.

With the game hanging in the balance in the final minute, the Foresters found one final opportunity. After an IUSB miss with the team ahead 59-57, Huntington worked for a potential game-tying shot, but Arcella came up with a massive block on a three-point attempt with 23 seconds left. The Foresters retained possession, however, and Huntington connected from beyond the arc with 10 seconds remaining to give Huntington its first lead of the fourth quarter.

IU South Bend had one final opportunity to reclaim the advantage, but the last-second attempt did not fall, allowing Huntington to escape with the one-point victory.

Chambers led the Titans with a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, adding three steals in a strong two-way performance. Fulks matched her with 16 points and six rebounds, while Booker contributed 11 points and a game-high four steals. Emma Reust made her presence felt on the glass with seven rebounds, including three offensive boards.

Despite the result, the Titans' defensive effort was impressive. IUSB held Huntington to 36.2 percent shooting overall and just 20.7 percent from three-point range, including a 1-for-10 performance from deep in the fourth quarter. The Titans forced 16 turnovers, converted them into 16 points, and dominated the paint with a 42-30 scoring advantage.

Offensively, however, IU South Bend struggled to find consistency from the perimeter, shooting just 2-of-24 from beyond the arc and 32.4 percent from the floor.

The Titans will look to bounce back on Saturday, hosting Cleary at 1:00 pm.
