Titans Stand Tall in Physical Battle, Pull Away From Cleary

SOUTH BEND --- IU South Bend battled through a physical contest Saturday afternoon, using a strong defensive finish and timely offensive execution to take down Cleary University, 74-62, at the Student Activities Center. The Titans (3-1) led for nearly 38 minutes of action, but the Cougars refused to go away before a decisive 12-4 run in the final seven minutes secured the victory.

The Titans wasted little time establishing themselves, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage behind four early points from Aubrie Booker and a putback from Keylee Hudson. Cleary answered with perimeter shooting, briefly taking an 11-9 lead midway through the first quarter. Kenzie Fulks responded with a three-pointer to regain the advantage, and IUSB never trailed again, carrying a 19-17 edge into the second frame.

After a slow opening stretch to the second quarter, the Titans found their rhythm with an 8-0 run, fueled by back-to-back buckets from Booker and a layup from Bradie Chambers. The offensive burst extended the advantage to eight points, forcing a Cleary timeout. The Cougars continued to battle, but IU South Bend maintained control behind efficient scoring from Hudson and Fulks, entering halftime with a 37-30 lead.

The second half brought more offensive fireworks from both sides. IU South Bend shot 55.6 percent in the third quarter, with Chambers and Fulks combining for 12 points to keep the Titans rolling. A layup from Emma Reust stretched the lead to 14 midway through the frame, the largest advantage of the afternoon to that point.

Cleary responded with its strongest offensive quarter of the game, shooting a scorching 71.4 percent from the field. Despite the push, IUSB matched the visitors with 22 points in the period to preserve a 59-52 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Cougars continued to apply pressure in the final stanza, eventually cutting the deficit to four at 62-58 with 7:18 remaining. But with the game hanging in the balance, the Titans found another gear.

Chambers delivered an immediate response, burying a three-pointer on the following possession to restore a seven-point cushion. Cleary battled back within five, but Lindsay Arcella converted a putback following a Chambers steal before Chambers drilled another triple and followed with a jumper to extend the lead to double digits. Hudson added a late basket to cap a 12-4 closing run, putting the finishing touches on IUSB's third victory of the season.

Booker led the Titans offensively with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting, adding four rebounds while committing zero turnovers. Chambers delivered one of her most efficient outings of the young season, pouring in 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. She added six rebounds and eight crucial fourth-quarter points to help seal the win.

Fulks matched Chambers with 16 points of her own, shooting 6-of-9 from the floor while dishing out a team-high three assists. Hudson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals, while Reust contributed six points and five boards.

The Titans shot 48.4 percent from the field and controlled the interior, outscoring Cleary 36-22 in the paint. IUSB also took advantage of its opportunities, turning 11 Cougar turnovers into 16 points while committing just seven turnovers of its own. The Titans dominated second-chance scoring as well, holding a 14-4 advantage.

Defensively, IU South Bend rose to the occasion when it mattered most, holding Cleary to just 10 fourth-quarter points and shutting the visitors out from beyond the arc over the final 10 minutes.

The Titans will now prepare to face Goshen on Wednesday at 5:30 pm inside the Student Activities Center.
